6. Conclusions

Without the participatory and ambiguous aspects of Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s artwork, I do not believe that he would have been able to still facilitate the infiltration of the homoerotic in heteronormative spaces. In fact, it is these aspects of his work that speak to me the most, and I love that he employs them in his art to generate inclusivity and empathy, as well as to entrust his audience with finding their own meaning within his work. I believe that his exploration of love and loss is especially relevant now as we endure another pandemic with COVID-19, and I believe that his work could potentially be very meaningful to those of us who have also lost loved ones to the virus. Finally, I think that his practice of creating deeply personal art from a distance could potentially help current artists who are hoping to use art as a means of coping with loss.
